Robbie Anderson praises Baker Mayfield, set to be Panthers’ QB – When the Carolina Panthers acquired Baker Mayfield in July, it was expected that he would be named the starting quarterback in week one of the 2022 NFL season against his old club, the Cleveland Browns.
The Athletic reports that Mayfield will be the starting quarterback for the first game of the regular season at Carolina, thus it looks that my projections were accurate.
Mayfield was battling alongside 2018 first-round selection Sam Darnold, whom Carolina acquired before to the 2021 season via trade.
Robbie Anderson, who recently lauded his new quarterback’s confidence and leadership, should find the news of Mayfield’s promotion to QB1 to be music to his ears.
Tuesday, Anderson told reporters, “He’s brilliant.” “He has taken up the offense quite quickly. I enjoy his enthusiasm a lot. I like this quality in him a great deal. Admire his leadership and self-assurance.”
This is a change from earlier in the year, when Anderson replied to an NFL Network story that the Panthers were interested in dealing for Mayfield with a “No way” remark on Instagram.
Anderson then removed the tweet and said that his support of Darnold stemmed from their time together with the New York Jets.
“What I was doing was in Sam’s defense, do you get what I’m saying?” In July, Anderson said on the “I AM ATHLETE” podcast. “Because I believe, at the end of the day, that Sam and I do have chemistry, but it’s like I have to start again, you know what I mean? It was not a lack of respect for him. It was really a defense of my current quarterback.”
Mayfield started the first preseason game for Carolina against the Washington Commanders, completing four of seven passes for 45 yards.
